Rex 1516

I visited this joint on a Wednesday because I wanted to let all of you know about the great deal they have here on Tuesday and Wednesday’s. I have been to Rex’s many of times and my favorite dish they have is their brisket. Their brunch is also spectacular, as well as their Sunday night Baltimore special Pit beef sandwich with $2 Natty Boh’s, so pretty much anytime you visit Rex’s you will leave with a smile on your face. Their Tuesday and Wednesday special consists of the burger of the week which is created by a special guest chef, the majority of these special guest chefs come from other great restaurants around the city, a shot of Buffalo Trace bourbon and a pint of the Philadelphia Brewing Company’s Newbold IPA for $15.

I started the night with a glass of the Trilogy red wine and an order of the Escargot and Andouille Cornbread Stuffing. For those of you that have never had escargot I would describe it as a cross between the consistency of a mussel and the taste of a portabello mushroom. The Escargot at Rex’s is a delicious version. The butter and garlic infuses the snails with a rich flavor while the mix of cheeses melted on top adds a terrific savory finish to the dish. The Andouille Cornbread Stuffing is a very unique dish for this area of the country. The cornbread stuffing is perfectly cooked which leads to a moist finish while the addition of the andouille adds a flavorful kick.

The month of March happened to be when they decided to honor their staff by allowing them to design  a burger each week. The burger came with carmelized onions, chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and cheddar. I ordered it medium rare and as always it came out as I asked. The best thing about the burger specials at Rex 1516 is no matter what is on them they are always tasty because of the spectacular patty they use. The special was really good, it was cooked perfectly and the carmelized onions and fresh lettuce gave the burger a terrific taste.

Besides the fabulous atmosphere and tasty menu at Rex’s, there is one other reason to frequent this location and that is to end your night at one of the all-time Classic establishments in Philadelphia, Bob and Barbara’s or as I like to say Bob and Barbs. Bob and Barbs is the originator of the citywide special and a location I have been visiting since I started drinking, I must say, I don’t always remember leaving, but today I did, I ordered one special to end the night, the special is a PBR and a shot of Jim Beam for $3.50. This is a great nip to the end of the night, but it is also a great nip to start the night.

Rex 1516 is a 4 out of 5 Tizzle experience.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry!!!
